Volvo Small Car 2015

The Barcelona Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) and Volvo present the 2005 thesis projects carried out by students of the IED’s Automobile Design course. This is the first and only course taught at university level in this field in Spain.

The projects include ideas on how the car may develop in future generations. The characteristics of the “Volvo 2015” culture are interpreted from the different perspectives of a group of young European designers.

In addition, the projects are linked to the theme of different social groups, as defined by Volvo.

IED students have developed their designs for the exterior and interior of a Volvo, by linking Scandinavian design with a Mediterranean setting.

The Volvo Project

The project consists of designing an exterior for a Volvo car. The design should be aimed at adult, family-oriented people and at a specific social group defined by Volvo. The car should be functionally advanced in terms of its layout, the materials and technology used, and the interaction between different types of user. It should also be reliable. Innovation, in terms of the design’s functionality and reliability, will be created by researching perceptions of: the Scandinavian design, modern architecture and functional design. The design will be exciting and use sustainable and recyclable materials - essential in today’s world - whilst focusing on technology.

In summary, the project consists of designing a new concept for the exterior of a compact, 4 seater Volvo.

Barcelona is the ideal conceptual environment for developing a new type and source of creativity that could give rise to a fresh perception of the outside world. This study will be useful and in keeping with the local culture and requirements of people in Barcelona and Catalonia. It will also be applicable to the European market. The design will work on a series of common values: quality; technology; safety, prestige, etc.

Volvo UCC

Volvo UCCThis is a vehicle for a young family. Its strong personality, functionality and versatility makes it the most complete in its range. The values and rationality of the Nordic brand blend with the sensitivity of the Mediterranean influence. Hard, well-defined lines, with a smooth finish. A robust but light car. A slender form, which uses a well-proportioned body as a point of reference. The vehicle is for a young couple, from 25 to 40 years old, with one or two children, a father who enjoys driving, a mother who looks for convenience and a child laden with toys. The client seeks a comfortable and sporty car to drive to the mountains and needs a car with plenty of luggage space. This is an estate car. Easy to manoeuvre, fresh and dynamic.
Interior Concept
This space is designed for the pleasure of all its occupants. A minimalist philosophy is used, to give a sensation of serenity. The colours and materials complete this definition. The seats and the layout produce a sensation of comfort. The interior reflects the exterior as much as possible, in the lines and volumes. The backseats are designed with the needs of a schoolchild in mind.

Volvo BCC 69

Volvo BCC 69The Volvo BCC69 is a car designed for today’s cities. It is in line with the image that current society requires: competitiveness, aggressiveness and agility. Its form clearly reflects this image. It has four dynamic seats, and represents a fusion between the Nordic design (functionality and the mix of materials) and the sensitivity, excitement and strength of Mediterranean design. Clearly inspired by “vintage”, with a wider grille and the “shoulder” broken down into two lines, the car has a more aggressive design, which is directly related to the target market. It brings a new philosophy into the brand’s design.

Volvo S20

Volvo S20The challenge- A Volvo people carrier This car is designed for young families of four, to be used mostly by parents who are responsible, with some adolescent characteristics, calculating, farsighted, happy, spontaneous, confident, with good taste, but at the same time “casual” and highly pragmatic. This design was chosen as Volvo does not have a people carrier on the market. In addition, filling this gap will create a perfect blend between the Scandinavian firm’s history of safety and the versatility of a vehicle of these dimensions.

Volvo XCity

Volvo XCityThis car is aimed at a young, urban, upper-middle class family in 2015, with one or two children. A SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) has been designed for this market. The XCity is a small, economical car with a robust design, a dual concept, which provides a degree of freedom leading to a even more sophisticated city life. A compact vehicle that is versatile, urban, manoeuvrable and safe. XCity directly enters a new B segment for Volvo. It is in keeping with the brand’s values and the values of the public it is aimed at.

Anttis

Anttis“Sail through the city.“ On a sea of sensations, in a city in constant change, Antiss was created: an urban vehicle that encourages interaction between the driver and the city. The exciting image of the nautical world is transferred to the urban environment to create a combination of surfaces that are in perfect harmony with the medium in which they move. Three basic aspects were used to develop the Antiss concept: the city as the medium in which we move; the nautical field as the main inspiration; and the target market. These three pillars supported the study and the development of this new concept. Barcelona design, mixed with nuances of Scandinavian design were also used as a source of inspiration. To sum up, a handful of norms guided us in the design of a vehicle. The design did not arise from a banal concept, but from a strong conceptual base.

Daniel Solsona and José María Pérez
Volvo 1M-3W

Volvo 1M-3WRomanticism and the form of a violin were the inspiration for the Volvo 1M-3W’s concept of movement. The dynamism and force of the P 1800 ES were the bases for the sporty image of this car. Given the developments in Volvo’s products and brand image, we considered that the next logical step after the c30 was a Shooting Brake such as the 1M-3M, with its radical but elegant image, its four seats, its load capacity, and its highly versatile use, inherited directly from the P 1800 ES. The exterior is inspired by the cold and pure lines of the traditional Scandinavian design. The interior is warm and protective, and suggestive of the essence of Mediterranean life.
